FMCSA Proposes to Ban Handheld Cellphone Use While Driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the December 21, 2010 Federal Register which proposes to restrict the use of hand-held mobile telephones, including hand-held cell phones, by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) while operating in interstate commerce.

NIOSH Seeks Comments and Schedules Public Meeting on Occupational Exposure to Carbon Nanotubes and Nanofibers

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has requested public comment on its draft Current Intelligence Bulletin, Occupational Exposure to Carbon Nano tubes and Nano fibers, by February 18, 2011. In addition, the Agency has scheduled a public meeting for February 3, 2011 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to discuss and obtain comments on the draft document.  

ISO Survey Seeks Feedback from ISO 9001 Users

ISO is carrying out a survey of existing and potential users of ISO 9001:2008, the global benchmark for quality management, to gather feedback to help decide whether the standard needs further improvement and, if so, what needs modifying.
ISO's rules require all its standards to be reviewed at least every five years to establish whether they should be confirmed, revised or withdrawn.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have posted a Joint Statement on Bed Bug Control in the United States. This document highlights emerging public health issues associated with bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) in communities throughout the United States.

Workplace Violence: DOJ Funded Website Focuses on Domestic and Sexual Violence

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has categorized workplace violence into four types: 1) violence associated with criminal intent, 2) customer/client violence, 3) employee-on-employee violence, and 4) violence associated with personal relationships. The last category includes sexual violence and spillover of domestic violence into the workplace.
 

OSHA Announces Informal Public Hearing for Walking Working Surfaces and Fall Protection Changes

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced on Friday November 12, 2010 that OSHA is convening an informal public hearing to receive testimony and documentary evidence on the Walking-Working Surfaces and Personal Protective Equipment (Fall Protection Systems) proposed rule (29 CFR part 1910, subparts D and I), published on May 24, 2010 (73 FR 28862).
